Nagoya Proton Therapy Center

Q&A

Q1: What is proton therapy?

A: It is a type of radiation therapy where the electrons are removed from hydrogen atoms and the remaining protons accelerated to very high speeds.

Q2: How is proton therapy different from X-ray therapy?

A: In proton therapy, we can focus radiation on the cancer site alone, which means reducing the effects on healthy tissue.

Q3: What sort of cancer can be treated with proton therapy?

A: Not all cancers can be treated using proton therapy. We need to look at the illness and the patient’s physical condition to see if this treatment will be suitable. Please contact us and then bring in a doctor’s letter of introduction as well as other materials like CT and MRI scan results for a diagnosis.

Q4: Is the therapypainful?

A: You will not feel any pain, itching, or heat from the radiation. However, a couple of weeks after you have been irradiated with the proton beams, you will start to look as if your skin got sunburned or similar. These are the sort of symptoms that will appear due to the proton beams.

Q5: How long does the therapy take?

A: Proton therapy takes about 20 minutes a time, five days week from Monday to Friday. The duration of the proton beam treatment will depend on the area for treatment, but it takes about two months for most patients.

Q6: Can the therapy be undergone as an outpatient?

A: Yes it can. However, depending on your illness and physical condition, you may need to stay at the hospital as an inpatient.
